What Are Energy Star Shingles?

In our last post we discussed asphalt shingles. This week we will be looking at an alternative roofing option – energy star shingles. Homeowners can take advantage of up to a $1,500.00 tax credit for choosing to use qualified Energy Star Cool Shingles. Energy Star qualified roofing products are certified as such for their ability to reflect more of the sun’s rays. This, in turn, lowers the roof’s surface temperature, decreasing the amount of heat transferred into the building and lowering the amount of energy needed for home cooling. Roof products qualify for the Energy Star label based on their solar reflectance.

In addition to the tax savings, homeowners can also benefit from the resulting energy savings.  For example, Energy Star estimates that the average homeowner spends approximately $1,000.00 annually on heating and air conditioning costs.  The Cool Roof Rating Council (CRRC) estimates that 7% to 15% of these energy costs can be eliminated with the average energy savings from reflective shingles.  While the level of energy savings that can be achieved with reflective roofing is highly dependent on facility design, insulation used, climatic conditions, building location, and building envelope efficiency, a rough calculation of energy savings can be made using the Roof Savings Calculator.
